A few question about structure strength
Permalink

I've been watching the series a few times by now and i've learnt so much about cars, welding, and British comedy, and I cannot thank Nik and Richard enough for the series.

However, i did develop a few questions watching alone as I starts to understand a bit more over time about the strength of certain parts of the build, I am pretty sure they have all these planned out and way ahead of me, and maybe I am just couldn't keep up with the pace of the videos and missing the parts where they address them, so i would like to ask if someone had answer to these:

1. How does the side tube join the chassis? I may have missed them, but i don't think there is any tube or U bar joining the side tubes to the chassis rail parallel to them.

2. Steering arm being directly welded to the gas struts, is the welding about 200mm long strong enough compared to the original cast iron arm? are they going to reinforce them later? To me, i think the reason that they have to move the steering arm to such high a location is mainly due to the earlier decision of moving the position of the steering rack mount.

3. In the 12th episode, the anti-roll bar fastener are being mounted directly under the floor, and if I remember it correctly, it is of 2mm sheet steel, wouldn't it wobble with the anti-roll bar if not being reinforced? Did I miss the reinforcing structure again?

I cannot wait to see how they are going to paint the whole chassis, are they going to build an oven inside the workshop to bake the paint? are they going to use some of the sound absorbing paints? Are they going to shorten the back seat base so legs could be squeezed in for the 2nd roll for people who wants to bake their butts? How are they going to address the bottom transverse bar under the engine? it is certainly not going to be mounted to the radiator mounting bar isn't it?

I have to admit that I am equally worried/interested in the mounting of the steering arm to the strut. I feel I must be missing something here.

It's not a particularly rare set-up. VAG use it as have many other manufacturers. We're not worried!
