Episode 33?

I really did think that lockdown would give an opportunity for the chaps to make leaps and bounds of progress with Binky and that we'd have an episode a week to help keep(?) us sane.

Presumably they are largely at the mercy of the paint shop and its ability to get supplies of rainbow paint etc, although there are some non-paint things to do that could be done with just Ralph for company:

  • Rich set us up in episode 31 for the need for the engine wiring loom (quite literally a good shielding job)
  • We were promised that the rest of the wiring loom was to be wrapped and grommited (that is a verb - I just made it up)
  • The wheels don't seem to have been finalised
  • Likewise the brake system, which I assume still needs attention such as coating the calipers in lurid purple (/dull olive green) and finding some pads capable of stopping a 2 tonne Mini from Mach 1.27
  • Springs and dampers? Perhaps I'm over-thinking a bolt on task and obviously they can't set it up until everything is back on the car. Also istr steering arm brackets being welded on to the Toyota front dampers so maybe this is a refurb only (doubt it)
  • Re-making the wheel arch extensions (they said it, not me. I think they're fine.)
  • Ordering and grooming the fluffy dice
  • Hair cuts & general grooming

What jobs am I missing?

*edited after it was found out that 1) I couldn't count and 2) Episode 32 was released, covering off the 1st item on my list.

I think they've been getting on with Binky quite nicely recently - Ep 33? - I'm happily waiting for Ep.32! wink (this weekend!)

After all Ep 32 will be the 5th instalment this year not to mention a gearbox Howie did it, Ep.5 of Escargot and Outtakes 5

Not bad for 2 guys trying to run a business in a shed

Now what was that about keeping sane?

Thanks Forsh. Where did that week go?
Nevertheless, I agree with you totally; what's not to like about a Binky weekend?

I think I'll have to update my 1st post after 32 has been absorbed. From the preview picture, I'm optimistic about the engine loom being completed. Maybe even the intercooler plumbing?

Your list in post #1 Kirk might get a whole lot longer seeing as Ep.32 will be the Longest. Binky. Episode. Ever.

Don't forget the Charge Air Cooler with brackets to replace the block of wood!

Also engine dyno test, 400bhp should be a start point.

Sure enough chaps, my list needs to get longer - even though 32 was great (watched it twice just to make sure that Nik really did fabricate a charge cooler in 3 minutes and 12 seconds) and lots was done. Well, I say lots but I did watch a video of BMW making an S1000RR in a few hours and installing the whole engine loom took significantly less time than was spent road testing.

Given the flagrant disregard for "just money", do you think they will gold foil the whole Binky engine bay?

 Well Gordon Murray would

As I speculated on an earlier thread...

Forsh wrote:

Speaking of POWER!

I've read the standard throttle body is good for upto 450bhp and the Garrett GTX3582R is rated for 450-850bhp and you need to keep an eye on the 3sgte Gen2 block above 650bhp

So we are looking at a window between 450-650bhp

11s quarters anyone? Maybe 10's ???

Should be fun!

And getting back to the title of this thread...

Ep.33 - Paint! - Whoopee!

We should have a virtual sweepstake* on colour:

White ………………………………………………………………….. Me

Rainbow...……………………………………………………………..(one of Richard's children)

Barbie Pink...………………………………………………………...(the other twin?)

Light Grey...…………………………………………………………..?

British Racing Green...…………………………………………..Someone Completely Different (aka Forsch hedging his bets)

Ford XR3i Metallic Grape...…………………………………….?

Chrome...………………………………………………………………..?

Black as a black cat in a coal hole at midnight......RWillett

Honda Pirate Black...……………………………………………..Forsh

White + Grey ………………………………………………………..The Chief Smeg

Please enter your guesses below and I'll update the table. I could add all the original BMC colours from the MiniMania site...

11s quarters would be ridiculous and therefore highly likely.

British Racing Green if it's from your list. I have to say I hate it as a colour though.

Personally speaking I'd go as black as a black cat in a coal hole at midnight during a solar eclipse whilst wearing Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses and with my eyes closed. I'd want people to hear me before they see me scream past them whilst giggling like a loon.

I still think the BRG water pipe on the engine is significant

BRG would keep it 'sleeper'

Or Paddy Hopkirk - bright red with a white roof

What do we think the chances of a contrasting roof?

Or a Mr Bean-esk yellow with black bonnet

Or an MG Rover Monogram Chromatic flip paint?

confuse

My colour of choice would be Honda Pirate Black - Well it does have S2000 seats!

 2017 Nissan GT-R

1740kg curb weight

all wheel drive 565bhp - 467lb.ft

10.8s 1/4s

just sayin!

White. Binky was white, although white horses are referred to as Grey for some reason, maybe it will be white with a grey roof?

Sadly White has already been taken (by me!) so I'll update the list and put you down for White+Grey.

Somehow your comment also reminded me that the guys had suggested that the wheel arch extensions would be re-made. I wonder what colour they will be? Light black perhaps? Also, should there be a trim piece along the sill linking the arch extensions?

I wonder if Ep.33 will include the wheel arches and reveal what alloys they'll be using

4x108pcd I vote for Capri Pepper Pots!

Or stay traditional and go for the iconic Minilite styleeee

Well it is a 4x4!

Red and silver two tone - why not!?!  disbelief

Due to the track of the GT4 and the fact Nick banded the steel concept wheels on the inside then I'm guessing the Alloys will have quite a high offset.
There'll not be any deep dish slot mags here!

Your OZs could be a good shout

Cant figure out why they'd need longer studs though unless it was just a few mil' to suit alloy over steel? Can't remember them saying what they were off cos Celica would have been 5x100?

I’m thinking they will be trying for something that looked like the old Mag Alloys that they used to fit

I hope so - although maybe white on white is a bit overkill? I just thought they might be right from a weight point of view and would look appropriate considering the car's likely performance without being too "in your face". I have an inkling that the Minilite look is more likely.

With you on the longer studs - as ever, we'll have to wait and see but it seems quite logical for it to just be an allowance for alloys.

"They" being BL/Rover, or do Nik & Rich have form?

(PS/ I put you down for White/Grey on the virtual sweepstake. There's another thread on colour so I might bring the other crystal ball gazers into the table.)

I wonder if we'll get Ep.6 of Escargot before a Honda Pirate Black Project Binky is revealed?

(still can't get my mind off the BRG water pipes though - Is it too late to change my mind in the sweep? I think I might want to change horse so to speak - see what I did there?!? biggrin )

I wonder if we'll get more Escargot before the end of time - but that's only based on extrapolation of the current work rate. To be fair, I have a suspicion that the design is somewhat dependent on Binky's tie-down arrangements and finished weight - and these have probably been only finalised in the last decade, so it's quite understandable. And it requires really big spanners so obviously there's going to be a need for longer tea breaks...

Forsh wrote:

'Cos it's you, I've changed it. Just this once, mind; No flip-flopping about like a flip-flop.

For you non-twitterists - BOM Twitter feed has spoken!

BOM @badobsessionmsp
New series starts on 20th September (or thereabouts) documenting the build, prep, racing, testing and subsequent improvement of our little C1. It's going to run weekly until late October and in the meantime we're back on Binky and Escargot which will air as soon as they're ready.

Have any projected dates for "Return of Binky" or "Escargo" to the channel????

Much as I've enjoyed the Citroen antics (and they really did catch me off guard with the final episode "plot twist") I can't wait for some more Binky. Although it's going to be very special whatever, it feels like one of those films where they're just setting you up for the final chapter in which (hopefully) all the main cliff-hangers will be resolved.

I can't see that everything is going to be completed in this next one but wouldn't it be nice if it moved under its own power?

Fantastic, Mr Forsh! Now I'm wondering where "a little carbon fibre" might possibly live in the interior when so much has already been accounted for... Replacing the seat shells? Nah. New speaker grilles? Hmm.

Edit: I looked at the Trimworks "mood boards"(?) of BOM's Facebook page and see the CF mostly in the dash - which is nice. I hope they are making self-supporting mouldings using the original bits as patterns rather than just covering the Rover etc parts in CF stickers in boy racer fashion. Mind you, I'd imagine the wooden dash will have rotted to nothing through natural processes by the time they get to that particular challenge (beyond Ep.33). Time will tell.biggrin

I see Rich is playing with Jaguars now (for the MG?). I think this is a diversionary tactic and suspect that the government has forced BOM to delay the release of Ep.33 until after their latest stupid Brexit news as they know it may be the only thing that can boost the country's morale to viable levels. Devious.

Personally, I'd far rather have Nik & Rich giving a daily Binky Briefing than listen to a pointless twit talking bollocks.

December 2020 Update: Everything sucks. We might have been able to finish episode 33 before Christmas if we'd have been happy to end the video in a haphazard and frankly slapdash way and we decided we weren't prepared to do that...

They are the original Rover-Sport Pack arches they borrowed back in Ep 14 then set about cutting up some pattern part arches to extend using LRP

Tricky to 3D print you say? - I'm thinking due to the complexity. 3D printing would be an "easier" route to a convincing arch shape

Tick tock tick tock - we'll soon find out!...
