Binky Wheel Options

Well the Paint colour guessing game is done and dusted and it turns out they just painted Binks the same colour as before...

But with a subtle twist

So we assume they fitted longer wheel studs to the hubs to facilitate alloys - But which ones?

I'm thinking Nick will pay homage to the originals [above] and go with something like these...

Thoughts?

Mmm. Nice. I prefer the grey(? black?) ones though they'd need a BOM logo in the centre of course.
I remain partial to the 11 spoke OZs I posted in the Ep33 thread though.

Or maybe the Sportpack Minilites to compliment the sportpack arches are too hard to ignore...

I could see them going for an option that looks like the mag alloys you could get - you know, to keep it looking standard and OEM...

I'm not clear from that tweet above whether Rich was posting those pics of wheels or just saying that they've had some other wheels made?

Also, are those wheels on the original the same as found on the 1100 Special? (my friend had one of those and it is the reason I love Minis. That and the Cooper S. And another friend's Mini.)

Wheels are my suggestions of a variation on what Binky was wearing 7 years ago

The tweet stands alone as "we've had so wheels made" but zero details or clues

Also go by the name Exaction wheels apparently

Am I right in remembering that Nik mentioned the proof of concept wheels were intended to look a little bit like a Cooper reverse rims?

Perhaps they've got something like these made up.

Hi and welcome to the select few.

He did say something like that during that wild episode when they modified their lathe to spin the steel prototypes.

Now that they have access to a large scale 3D printer, maybe they'll just print their own Cooper copies. What could possibly go wrong?

So that'll be why Binky had "Special" wheels on then...

Thanks very much!

Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if that 3D printer could be used to print custom retro Wheeltrims for steel wheels of their own design?

Its an extremely pie in the sky idea I know, considering the popularity and appropriateness of alloys for something like Binky. At this point I have complete faith in whatever the lads decide to do!

Maybe lockdown has gotten to me.

A 3D printer could print wheel trims, but why would you? You could also use a 3D print as a core for "lost PLA" printing (in which you cover a 3d printed part in casting sand then heat it up above 200 deg C until the PLA melts and runs out, leaving you a void into which you can pour your metal alloy. It's a bit more complex than that but you get the picture.)

Lockdown has gotten to us all I reckon, and the only antidote is watching a couple of mad guys make a mad car. That and substance abuse.

@Forsh: Never knew there were white specials. My mate's was the sort of brick orangey-red colour (an attempt by BL to hide the rust?) and I've seen a few silver ones. Unlike original Binky above, they had the graduated stripe on the bottom of the doors. Istr that you could fit Cooper disc brakes as a straight swap (Cooper Ss were too big or the axles were too long or something). A little less powerful than Binky will be but a bundle of fun nevertheless.

Looks like brick orangey-red colour was actually Metallic Rose...

https://www.aronline.co.uk/cars/mini/mini-special-editions-1979-1100-special/

Maybe someone in the past "modified" Nicks Mini - either by repainting it and removing the vinyl roof or (more likely) adding the wheels and badges

On Ep.29 @25:45 Richard talks of the wheel studs going to be too short so longer ones are fitted - no indication why

We were thinking this wouldn't be require for steels and hints at alloys

Whatever the wheels will be, they'll be shod in Yokohamas it seems. But which ones? I haven't had Yokohamas since my MR2 days so I have no idea of the options.

Missed this for some reason. It was indeed Metallic Rose. Thanks for the link - really interesting. I'd agree that Binky looks like it was a badge-con job but I really hope they sneak a "Special" marking on the upgraded car here and there; Seems apt. Maybe "Specialer"?

So much of interest in that picture (not least the wheels of course). What are those wing mirrors? Is that the air filter poking into the wheel well? I honestly didn't think that it was their intention to have a finished (running) car this weekend but it looks like I was wrong. Can't wait for the next episode.

Well they are in Telford
It's well know a project car is never finished but Binky sure looks finished!
BOM centre caps and "Mini Specialer" badges aside - probably for a future episode?!

Historic day for the Historic Rally Festival - Pity I can't make it back, spent the day waiting for Binky to arrive yesterday, I've only just dried out
